Process enhancements, innovations and sustainable processes for the pharmaceutical and chemical industries

Langenfeld -

Global custom synthesis specialist Saltigo GmbH will present its extensive portfolio of services at the upcoming CPhI Worldwide (the international trade fair for pharmaceutical ingredients) in Frankfurt, Germany, from October 25-27, 2011. The focus will be on exclusive organochemical syntheses for the entire life cycle of active pharmaceutical ingredients. “Custom manufacturing is our core business and our technology platform can meet virtually any customer need,” says Dr. Andreas Stolle, head of the Pharma business line at Saltigo. “We're at the cutting edge in terms of innovative technologies, sustainability and cost management and we therefore generate added value for our customers,” he adds.

For chemist Stolle, innovation is part of day-to-day business at Saltigo: “Being innovative is one of our strengths and is firmly established in our corporate culture. For a custom manufacturer such as Saltigo, innovation means putting ideas into practice to then generate commercial value.” He remarks that consideration should not be limited to purely scientific innovations but that creative ideas for the actual business processes play an equally prominent role today. Stolle is well aware that large pharmaceutical companies from Saltigo's customer base go to considerable expense in generating a sustainable innovative corporate culture. For example, several high-profile pharmaceutical manufacturers have set up new departments, reinforced purchasing and initiated training programs for large numbers of employees.

“The right conditions in production, marketing and sales spur people on to find innovative solutions for customers,” says Stolle: “This can lead to significant improvements and therefore increase supply reliability and simplify workflows throughout the entire procurement chain, for instance, thus generating added value for manufacturers and buyers.”

From his own experience, Stolle can report that the biggest successes result from a genuine partnership between supplier and customer. “Common goals and shared successes are the basis for innovation,” he says.

No excuses with regard to safety

Saltigo is also continuously improving workflows internally and this year received the prestigious “Responsible Care Award” from VCI NRW (the North Rhine-Westphalia office of the German Chemical Industry Association) for the “Kein-Pardon-Initiative” (“No Excuses” Initiative), which aims to make significant improvements in occupational safety. Each year, Responsible Care (RC), an international initiative by the chemical industry, presents awards honoring outstanding and innovative examples of responsible practice in the chemical industry.

“Since Saltigo was founded five years ago, “customized competence” has been our guiding principle in tailoring our services to our customers' needs in our role as a reliable custom manufacturer,” says Dr. Uwe Brunk, head of the Agro & Specialty Chemicals business line. “In our view, it isn't just important to deliver on time, on spec and at the best price – provisions on occupational safety and environmental protection also have to be complied with,” he adds.

“We therefore launched the “Kein-Pardon-Initiative” (“No Excuses” Initiative), which takes into account safety in the workplace throughout the company and is incorporated into all measures. All Saltigo employees are given information and training and are asked to work together on continuously improving occupational safety throughout the company. In 2010, this initiative resulted in Saltigo achieving a lost time injury frequency rate (LTIFR), known in Germany as the MAQ (injury rate per million work hours), that is well below the average in our industry and brought us closer to our goal of preventing all workplace accidents.”

Injury rates are also falling continuously in the Group. In 2010, LANXESS had the lowest rates in Germany since the creation of this still young company. Last year, the Group recorded 33 accidents resulting in at least one day’s absence at its German sites and thus around 20 percent less than the previous year.

Focus on sustainability

LANXESS is raising its sustainability profile to safeguard its competitive position on the global market. It recently met the criteria for inclusion in the FTSE4Good Index, which lists companies that have performed particularly well in the areas of environmental protection, human rights and social standards. The FTSE4Good Index provides investors around the world with a basis for evaluating companies in terms of their corporate social responsibility, and is thus a criterion for decisions about sustainable investment.

LANXESS has also joined the world's biggest and most rapidly growing initiative for corporate social responsibility (CSR), the United Nations Global Compact.

In climate protection, too, LANXESS has set itself clear targets. It aims to deliver a 10 percent reduction in specific CO2 emissions and specific energy consumption for each business segment by 2015. Moreover, emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are also to be cut by 30 percent worldwide by 2015.

These sustainability initiatives have also led to good rankings in the Corporate Responsibility Rating. The renowned Munich-based agency oekom research has raised LANXESS' "Social" and "Environmental" ratings to C+.
